Trip to Perth, Australia and Day One - Expos U18s

It is Sunday morning here in Perth at about 6 am and I am awake early. I hope all the boys slept as well as I did last night.

The trip out to Australia had its adventures, as the computer systems between American and Qantas do not always speak clearly to each other. When the San Francisco segment got to the airport at SFO, American could not find our travel records, even though we had electronic tickets for everyone. What a mess! Three boys had no reference information through to Australia, so we booked them to LA and shipped their luggage under other people's names through to Perth.

In LA we were able to get all the boys' tickets easily, but then our flight leaving LAX was late and we lost a half hour in flight due to avoiding storms (a good thing in my opinion). We got to Melbourne with just about an hour to clear immigration, customs, get to the domestic terminal, and check in. Qantas almost did not let some of us on because we got to the counter about ten minutes before the flight. The Qantas counter and gate people were all wonderful and helpful, held the flight for us, and helped us with one lost boy whom we thought was lost in customs, but who was actually not lost and on the plane where he was supposed to be, but we had lost sight of him, and so were searching frantically. We all did make the flight to Perth successfully.

The boys were bussed to the field for practice where the pitchers had the chance to throw a bit, the boys playing field positions all had a chance to get used to each other in the field, and all the boys had a chance to hit a bit. The weather was lovely and warm, not too hot at all. At 4 pm the Australian host families arrived to meet their billets. The boys then left with their families. The guys with Australian sisters were smiling quite a bit! I wonder why?

Coming up for the Expos in Perth

Sunday is a relaxing day for us. We begin play on Monday with three games for the day. I will send communications about all the games daily. Until then...
