Getting to Know a Player

As the Goodwill Series Australia tour progresses and we hear of victories, feats and defeats, let's take a time-out and get to know some of our players.

Spencer Dennis

Spencer Dennis
Astros player Spencer Dennis of Baytown, TX, has also played baseball from a very early age. He began T-ball when he was four, and progressed through the little league system as he got older. When his Little League playing season was finished, Spencer didn't hang up his glove until next season, he played fall ball. At age 12 he was chosen to play on a Select Ball Team, a traveling team composed of above-average players hand-picked by various coaches. He played Pony League between little league and high school, where he played on the Junior Varsity Team last year as a freshman. He is currently a member of five traveling teams, touring mostly throughout Texas.

When he is not playing baseball, you may find him fishing, riding his dirt-bike or going to the movies with his friends. He likes to watch pro baseball games and attend baseball camps as well. Spencer is very self-motivated, and lifts weights every day after school. His Mom comments, "He will just go and work out by himself; you don't have to tell him anything." His hard work has paid off, as Spencer tied with an Australian player for the overall MVP of his age group during the Adelaide Tournament and leads the team in doubles and stolen bases. He studies hard as well, and is on the A-B honor roll at his high school.

Spencer's favorite thing about Australia is the friendliness of the local people. He also likes the opportunity to play against different players in different places.

What is Spencer's favorite thing about baseball? He says, "I love everything, really." He hopes to be drafted out of high school and pursue a career in professional baseball.

Commenting about David DiNatale and Spencer Dennis, Astros Coach Justin Humphries says that they are solid ball players for their ages and have great potential. They play hard every day, and are building a great future for themselves, whatever it may be. To sum it up, they come from great families, and are great kids.

David DiNatale

David DiNatale, a player for the Goodwill Series Astros Team, has loved baseball all of his life. David started playing T - ball when he was five years old and has progressively worked his way through the little league system. He has played Khoury league, and has been a member of numerous travel teams. When it came time for high school, he made the varsity baseball team of Westminster Academy in Ft. Lauderdale, F.L. as a freshman. In the fall, David played on his high school fall ball team, and in the summer he plans to play with the South Florida Pokers, a selective traveling team. As soon as he gets home, he is off to the Perfect Game Under Classmen Showcase in Ft. Meyers, F.L. lasting January 3 - 5. He will continue to play varsity ball at his high school next season.

Baseball is not all David does, in his spare time he enjoys playing ping-pong and backyard basketball and football with his friends. He also likes listening to music, and of course, weight lifting. He is an honor student, and has maintained a 4.1 GPA.

What does he like most about this trip to Australia? It's the great coaches and great teammates. He says, "I like our coaches. They're funny, they know a lot about baseball; they're good instructors." David plays center field, but his favorite thing is hitting. In fact, he leads the team in triples, batting average, on-base percentage and RBI's. He was pleased to hit a triple the first four consecutive games of the Adelaide tournament. What does David want to do for a career? Simple - "Play baseball."
