Talkin' Aussie

Planning to visit Australia any time soon? Have you ever heard the saying "English-speaking people are divided by a common language?" As you try to find your way around this beautiful continent, a small "Aussie dictionary" might be useful.

"Good day, Mate" -Yes, they really say this down here. It could be equated with the Southern expression "buddy", but it is used with total strangers and friends alike.

"No worries" - Used like our phrase "no problem"

"Car park" - Parking lot

"Canteen" - Concession stand

"Chemist" - Drug store

"Toilet" - The bathroom - not a fixture in the bathroom

"Lift" - The elevator

"Rubbish bin" - Trash can

"Serviette" - A napkin

"Breakie" - Breakfast

"Sunnys" - Sun glasses

"Footy" - A football

"Tucker Box" - Picnic basket

"Bluey" - A red-head

"Milko" - The milk-man (yes, they do have these)

"Good on ya" - Good for you, well done

"Totally buggered" - I'm really tired

"Billabong" - Pond

"Chips" - French fries

"Lemonade" - Sprite

"You've got two feet and a heart-beat" - Get up and do it yourself

"Bathers" - Bathing suit

"Entree" - Appetizers, not the main course
