Opening Ceremony The Perth tournament officially began this morning as players and spectators gathered for the opening ceremony, complete with a ceremonial first pitch and surprise guest. The ceremony began as tournament officials thanked the tireless efforts of the sponsors, scorers, umpires and other tournament volunteers. The American coaches were presented with small gifts to thank them for the time and energy they spent coaching the Goodwill Series Teams. Next Graham Pittaway, representative of the Lord Mayor of the Bayswater district, spoke, adding his thanks for the efforts of all the volunteers who donated their time and skill to make the tournament run smoothly. As he began to introduce the surprise guest, a large grey "animal" bounded onto the field doing hand springs. We soon found out the "mascot" was dressed as a Quokka, a rat-like animal found only in Rotsnest, West Australia. Everyone applauded as Mr. Pittaway threw the ceremonial first pitch, with the Quokka catching. The players and spectators then rose to hear both the Australia and USA national anthem and close the ceremony. This tournament will see a total of fifteen games involving American teams over the next four days. Monday the 30th the tournament finals will take place. The players have Tuesday the 31st off, and most will begin their journey home Wednesday the 1st. |
