Host Family Interview

What do Australians think of Americans? Let's ask a host family! The Pearce's are Australians born and breed. They have two children, one of whom is a 15-year-old baseball player. This is the second Goodwill Series tournament in which they have participated.

They like living in Australia. Mrs. Pearce enjoys the weather - not to hot, not to cold. She also likes the open spaces. With the overall small population, Australia isn't very crowded. They like the casual, friendly attitude of the people and the slower pace of life.

In regards to Americans, they find them very well mannered and usually interested in learning about the Australian culture. They say most Americans they have met are very confident and outgoing. And of course, their accent is . . . different.

The Goodwill Baseball Series have provided some wonderful opportunities for their family. Mrs. Pearce comments, "It's a good experience for us." Her favorite thing is that players get to know each other, and many part good friends.

I think one of the important things to learn on this trip is that people may live in different circumstances and cultures, but they are still people. Friends are still friends, even if they are on the other side of the world.

What's on the Menu?

You all know that the guys are playing baseball, but did anyone ask them what they are eating?
Allow me to introduce to you some interesting dishes of the Australian table.

"Meat pie"
This is very like our pot pie. It is a small pastry crust filled with any variety of things such as steak and potatoes, spinach and cheese or chicken.

"Floater"
This distinctly South Australian delicacy consists of a bowl of thick pea soup with a meat pie floating on the top.

"Giros"
A Giro is a masterful creation. We start with a round piece of a pita-like bread fried on a grill. Next we pile it high with lamb or chicken, tomato and lettuce, onion and garlic sauce. Roll it up, and eat!

Making Giros

"Pasties"
Similar to a meat pie, but filled with mostly finely vegetables and only a "bit of meat."

"Lemon Squash"
This is as close to American lemonade as it gets. It is a carbonated lemonade-like drink, but not as mellow-tasting as our lemonade. I think we' re going to miss it when we get back to the States.

"Calamari"
This is a nice way to say squid. It tastes like a remarkably tender rubber band (yes, I did try some.)
