Interview with Coach Scipio Spinks What is it like to be signed right out of high school, pitch against hall-of-famer's, get injured sliding into home plate with Johnny Bench catching and be a pro scout for twenty-three years, all in the same life-time? Ask Scipio Spinks, head coach of the Goodwill Series Astros Team. Scipio Spinks has played baseball all his life. As a child he played little league, but when he got to high school, his school didn't have a team. No problem - he played semi-pro ball on the week-ends through his high school days, until he signed with the Houston Astros in 1966, becoming the first black high school player to sign out of the Chicago area. In 1969 the big call came, and he pitched his first game as a major leaguer. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in '72 where he played two years before being traded to the Chicago Cubs. In '72 he slid into home plate (and Johnny Bench,) and injured his knee - basically a career ending injury. He retired in 1979 - but baseball was by no means over. Now, and for the past twenty-three years, he travels the country as a much respected scout for the Houston Astros. As the head coach of one of the Goodwill Series Baseball Teams, he comments that he has three pieces of advice to give aspiring players: play hard, practice hard, and have fun. He continues you must have all three to be a good player. He stresses, "You got to believe in the game, and believe in yourself." What is his favorite thing about the Goodwill Series Games? He says it's "the excitement and adventure of being over here and seeing different cultures," and "the opportunity to see their kids play down here." He also enjoys the friendliness of the local people. Scipio Spinks has been involved in professional baseball for thirty-seven years, and figures that he has pitched against at least fifteen hall-of-famers. The boys traveling as part of the Goodwill Series Teams count it a privilege to be able to learn from one of the masters in the wonderful world of baseball. |
